Councillors seem to me to be at least a year behind the times in their thinking.
Replies to date from councillors to my email protesting the $44 million library precinct and the almost 7% cumulative rates increases for the next 10 years, basically say that they’ve had very few complaints, that they think they’re acting in our best interests, that they can feel the ‘synergy’ this would bring; that ‘social infrastructure’ will be immensely enhanced by this one new library (what about the other 2 libraries currently servicing the ratepayers?); one even said they could imagine the library precinct would be “a virtual electro-magnet for the kind of talent that will bring our city investment, innovation, opportunities and jobs.”
I think they’re using meaningless words and phrases. And they are not paying attention to REAL LIFE around them here in Nelson: floods, dangerous storms, sea-level rise, poverty, homelessness, lack of housing, ageing infrastructure needing urgent repairs… So I say, “OPEN YOUR EYES COUNCiLLORS!”
What do you think?
